The Boston Celtics remain the top team in the NBA, despite suffering blows. The team received unfortunate news regarding Marcus Smart‘s injury. The reigning Defensive Player of the Year will be out for at least two weeks. Losing the defensive head can hurt the team in many ways and for sure on both ends of the floor. Perhaps that was the reason for a downcasted vibe within the team’s locker room. However, head coach Joe Mazzulla did his best to make the ambiance a bit lighter by cracking a joke on Smart.

Smart is highly athletic with his body and fans have seen him making flips on the court. So, it is only imaginable what he might be doing in the locker room. Knowing his guard was down with an ankle injury, Joe thought he had excellent timing to crack a joke on Marcus Smart. Before facing Miami Heat, the Celtics were shorthanded and eventually lost the game by 98-95. However, before the game, Joe walked past Smart, pulled off a somersault in front of him, and told him, “you can’t do that.”

According to Adam Himmelsbach of The Boston Globe, the head coach did that for no reason. The reporter initially thought that it was some kind of an “inside joke.” When he asked the point guard, he said that he and Mazzulla have never engaged in a battle of athletic prowess. Before ranting about his inability to perform a somersault, Smart admitted that he had no idea what Mazzulla was thinking. Later when the NBA star was asked he said he had no idea where it came from. “We need to stop giving him sugar,” Smart added

In the game against Toronto Raptors, Smart went down with a severe ankle injury and was unable to put his body weight on it. He was later helped off the court by Celtics’ staff. When he went down on the floor, it looked it he had hurt both his ankle and his knee. However, he later revealed that it was just his ankle.

The 3 x Defensive First Team player said that he had reaggravated the old injury that he suffered last season. Smart had injured his ankle when Kyle Lowry fell on his ankle. He also said that he doesn’t want to rush back on the court. “I don’t want to go out there and just rush back,” Smart said pregame Tuesday, “and we’re in this same predicament a couple months from now, a couple days from now, a couple weeks from now when I do come back and it just stays lingering than it has to,” he added.
