LeBron James is currently the face of the NBA. Megastar is widely considered the most influential athlete in the league. The LA Lakers wing has more than 100 million followers on Instagram, making him the most popular US sportsperson on the platform. Accordingly, James has often been one of the NBA’s most heavily discussed players. So there are many reporters around the megastar for the slightest of moves to capture. Sports leading media house ESPN also had their representative, even close to LBJ. For years, it was suggested that Brian Windhorst had a close relationship with James, and that helped ESPN to have the most coverage of the 18-time All-Star.

It’s very common for top reporters to build personal relationships with athletes. It can give them an inside track for information, validation of the same, and very personalized views of the athlete. But after a while, there are chances of that relation getting bettered by others or faint over the period. In a recent interview on the “Sports Illustrated Media Podcast,” Windhorst explained the same situation, “In years past, I had messaged with him, but we both kind of moved on. … LeBron doesn’t have personal relationships like that with reporters. He hasn’t for a long time.”

So maybe continuous hogging by the reporters forced him to stay from the media as much as possible. Also, social media plays a new role as “media” for the current era of players.
