Serena Williams is just one short of the magical number of 24. Another Grand Slam title and she will equal the record of most number of Majors won by anyone across different eras. Currently, the record stands in the name of icon Margaret Court. However, ever since Serena won her 23rd Slam at the 2017 Australian Open, defeating her sister 6-4, 6-4 in the final, the record has looked in jeopardy. So it is no wrong when Andy Murray describes the American as the GOAT of tennis.

Serena to chase elusive 24th Major at the US Open

Serena Williams

After winning in Melbourne three years ago, Serena Williams has been unable to lay her hands on another Grand Slam trophy. Since then, she has lost three Major finals out of the six competitions in which she has contested. This is uncharacteristic of Serena who had won 21 finals out of her first 25 finals of Grand Slams.

Nevertheless, Serena would be looking to end this losing streak in finals when she will bid for record-equaling 24th Grand Slam at the US Open, which begins on 31st August. The competition at the Flushing Meadows would be somewhat easy as World No.1 Ashleigh Barty and World No.2 Simona Halep will not play in New York. Moreover, a host of other superstars have withdrawn their names owing to the health concerns amidst the corona pandemic. This is the best chance for Serena Williams to set her record straight.

There is no doubt whatsoever when Murray calls Serena GOAT of tennis. However, this ‘GOAT’ needs to conquer just one more record to etch her name in the tennis books as ‘The Greatest Of All Time’.
