Newcastle United vs Norwich City: A resilient Newcastle side showed great character and spirit as they took the lead, courtesy of a Callum Wilson penalty, after going down to 10 men within the first ten minutes and it looked like Eddie Howe’s team were finally going to get their first win of the season but Teemu Pukki had other ideas. A sublime volley from the Finnish striker rescued a point for Dean Smith and Norwich as they now find themselves 18th in the Premier League this season and still within the relegation zone.
Here are the player ratings for the Newcastle United vs Norwich City match:
Newcastle United vs Norwich City Player Ratings
Newcastle United
Martin Dúbravka (GK) – (7.5/10)
A great showing from Martin Dubravka. Made some really important saves and kept Newcastle in the game.
Jamal Lewis – (5.5/10)
A poor showing from Jamal Lewis as he got beaten quite a few times tonight. He’ll be looking to improve on this performance
Ciaran Clark – (3/10)
A lazy attempt at a clearance, a clear pull of the shirt, a red card within 10 minutes – Ciaran Clark would be looking to forget tonight as soon as possible.
Fabian Schär – (6.5/10)
Fabian Schar really showed why he should start more often as he had an impressive outing tonight.
Javier Manquillo – (5.5/10)
Manquillo came up short every time Brandon Williams got close to him. Certainly not one of his best performances this season.
Allan Saint-Maximin – (8/10)
Allan Saint-Maximin was at the heart of attack for Newcastle. Constantly putting defenders on the backfoot who were petrified at his pace and footwork, he certainly made his presence felt before being subbed off.
Joe Willock – (7/10)
A decent performance from Joe Willock before being subbed out for Hayden. Attacked the flank well and linked up well with the midfield.
Jonjo Shelvey – (8/10)
An impressive performance from the experienced Jonjo Shelvey. Defended extremely well and always looked to put the ball in channels that would cause Norwich problems.
Ryan Fraser – (6/10)
Ryan Fraser didn’t get to do a whole lot before he was subbed out for Federico Fernandez in the 12th minute as Newcastle went down to 10 men.
Joelinton – (7/10)
Joelinton looked great tonight as he ran the channels well and linked up well with the midfield.
Callum Wilson – (8/10)
Callum Wilson ended his goal drought as he slotted the ball home from a penalty kick giving Newcastle the lead despite being a man down.
SUBSTITUTES –
Federico Fernández – (7/10)
Subbed on in the 10th minute to provide defensive cover to a 10-men Newcastle, Federico Fernandez had a job to do tonight and he certainly did not disappoint.
Isaac Hayden – (5.5)
After nearly scoring with his first touch, Isaac Hayden showed a poor display of passing defending. He certainly didn’t make a case for himself after initially being left out of the starting line-up.
Miguel Almirón – (N/A)
Norwich City
Tim Krul (GK) – (6/10)
Tim Krul wasn’t called upon a whole lot this game and he even got a glove to Callum Wilson’s penalty but unfortunately, wasn’t strong enough to keep the shot out of his net.
Max Aarons – (7/10)
A great display of football from Max Aarons as he linked up well with the midfield and attacked when needed on his side of the pitch.
Grant Hanley – (6/10)
Average from Grant Hanley as he paired up well with Gibson but was a little tentative when committing to tackles.
Ben Gibson – (7/10)
A fine evening for Ben Gibson as he contained Callum Wilson pretty well the entire game and didn’t let Norwich have a clean look at the goal.
Brandon Williams – (8/10)
A good outing for the youngster on loan. Showed composure while defending and was an essential attacking outlet.
Lukas Rupp – (7/10)
A decent performance from Rupp as he linked up well with the defence and midfield. Played sensibly when he had to and showed a spark of creativity when needed.
Josh Sargent – (6/10)
Ending his night early with an average performance from Josh Sargent. He was a constant attacking threat and had chances which, unfortunately, couldn’t be put away.
Billy Gilmour – (6/10)
A decent display of attacking football but a raised arm from Billy Gilmour gave Newcastle a penalty and their only goal of the game. He definitely wouldn’t want to see that one again.
Kenny McLean – (7/10)
One of the most intelligent players on the pitch. A decent ball carrier and always ready to put the ball in the box.
Christos Tzolis – (7/10)
A constant goalscoring threat, Christos Tzolis put immense pressure on the Newcastle defence before eventually being subbed off at half-time.
Teemu Pukki – (8/10)
Clinical is a word that describes Teemu Pukki perfectly as the Finnish international scored a sensational volley from the only real chance he had all game.
SUBSTITUTES –
Pierre Lees Melou – (5/10)
Melou had a great chance to put Norwich ahead in the dying moments of the game. Unfortunately for him, Dubravka managed to guess his intentions and got down low to save the game for Newcastle.
Adam Idah – (6/10)
Adam Idah lacked service tonight and didn’t really impact the game as much as Norwich would’ve hoped.
Dimitrios Giannoulis – (7/10)
A great sense of awareness led to Dimitrios Giannoulis grabbing an assist as he found Teemu Pukki in a crowded Newcastle penalty box.
