Bill Belichick is regarded as one of the greatest coaches in the history of the NFL. After all, guiding a team to six Super Bowl titles is not the easiest of the tasks to accomplish for a head coach. In addition to this, he has two more Super Bowl titles as Defensive Coordinator for the Giants.

He got the head coach’s position for the first time in 1991 for the Cleveland Browns and after staying there till 1995, he went to the New England Patriots as an assistant head coach. He then went back to the Jets as an assistant head coach and defensive coordinator and stayed there till 1999.

“Don’t want to be a coach of a team in transition”: Bill Belichick

Bill Belichick

During his stint with the Jets, a lot of drama transpired which paved the way to one of the most memorable press conferences in the history of the league. The stage was set, things were in the correct order and the Jets were ready to announce Belichick as the new head coach in 2000.

However, on the day of his introduction as the head coach of the New York-based franchise, Bill dropped the bomb during a press conference and announced his resignation. “my family has been in a situation where I was the head coach of a team in transition, a team that has gone through a lot of changes and frankly, it wasn’t a real good experience for me and my family,” Belichick had stated.

He claimed that although he doesn’t regret the years he has worked as a coach, he isn’t sure if he can keep doing it, especially for the Jets. As it turns out, Bill actually informed about his decision to the officials by writing, “I resign as HC of the NYJ” on a piece of paper.

Bill said a lot of things during the conference. He wished the Jets all the best, he praised the players but also commented that he wasn’t willing to be a part of a team in transition and then instantly claimed that he doesn’t mean the Jets when he talk about the “transition” part.

It goes without saying, the conference and Bill’s decision left everyone scratching their heads. However, the man had a bigger plan for himself. He joined the Patriots as the head coach in 2000 and the rest as they say, is history. Even Bill had claimed that moving away from the Jets was one of the best decisions of his life.

No matter what one says, it is true that the man gifted the NFL one of the most awkward yet memorable press meets of all time.
