The Miami Dolphins thrashed the Carolina Panthers 33-10 on Sunday. That’s not all, as the hosts ensured that the Panthers’ marquee signing Cam Newton had one of his worst statistical days in his career.

It was a one-sided quarterback duel. While Tua Tagovailoa of Miami threw for 230 yards and a touchdown on 27 of 31 passing attempts, Newton, on the other hand, completed only five of 21 passes for the Panthers (5-7), who have now lost seven of their last nine games.

Newton completed 92 passes for 92 yards, no touchdowns, and two interceptions. All of this combined for a quarterback rating of 5.8, which is by far the lowest of his career.

As things went out of control for the visitors, the quarterback was removed from the game in the fourth quarter.

With little over 10 minutes remaining and the Panthers behind by 20, Newton was replaced by P.J. Walker. Coach Matt Rhule later said that the decision was made because the Panthers were in a rush and Walker knew the two-minute offense better.

“PJ has a better grasp of the signals”

During the post-match conference, Newton spoke about his substitution. He said, “I spoke with the coach. He said we’re gonna put PJ in because he has a better grasp of the signals and the two-minute things. Because there are obviously things that are in too many that’s not necessarily in the game but the base game plan. And I was fine with that and at the end of the day, it’s still about being a professional at that particular point in time. I had more than enough opportunity to keep the game in the balance and you know there’s no need to put up a fight with that.”

Speaking about the loss, Newton emphasized what went wrong during Sunday’s game. He said, “We just lost footing early and we just got to find ways to get back on track.“

Cam Newton’s presence doesn’t guarantee success

Newton further stated, “This is the NFL. Nothing’s promised. Just because Cam Newton’s on your roster doesn’t mean you’re just going to win. Just because it’s a feel-good story doesn’t mean you’re going to win. I’m well aware of that.

Newton’s bad performance came less than three weeks after he was inked to a one-year contract for up to $10 million if he hits incentives for the rest of the season. The quarterback stated that he intends to utilize the next week to go further into the offense in order to avoid repeating what happened on Sunday.
