Amari Cooper may find himself playing outside of Dallas in 2022. A recent report by Adam Schefter suggests that the Cowboys are likely to release their all-star receiver before they owe him $20 million for the 2022 season.

The Cowboys traded for Amari Cooper in 2018 when they sent a first-round pick to the Raiders for him. Since then, he’s played 56 games in Dallas and has 292 receptions for 3893 yards and 27 touchdowns. He’s been their primary target since coming and has massively helped out Dak Prescott.

In 2019 and 2020, Amari Cooper was able to top 1000 yards as he had his best seasons in Dallas. Coming into 2021, the expectation was that he would carry over that production to further help the Cowboys’ offense. While the offense certainly benefited, Cooper had his worst season in Dallas with just 68 receptions for 865 yards.

Despite this dip in form and massive pricetag, Colin Cowherd recently revealed that he believes the Cowboys would be making a mistake by releasing Amari Cooper.

On his show, ‘The Herd’, Colin Cowherd was quoted saying “I don’t like it, I don’t think it’s smart. So now, you’re left with CeeDee Lamb who had one catch against the Niners in the playoff game. Cedrick Wilson is a nice #3. Michael Gallup, if you sign him off the ACL. The Rams are sending you a message, you can’t have enough guys on the perimeter. It’s a weapons league now. I would not move on from Amari Cooper.”

Cowherd further added “Dak Prescott is not the same quarterback without him. In 9 games without him, he is a different quarterback. The other thing is there’s a maturity with him and a reliability with Amari that I like. You were a playoff team so you’re drafting near the bottom of the first round so you’re not getting all those fast receivers at the combine. I don’t like this at all.”

The money factor is surely the biggest reason why the Cowboys want to move on from Amari Cooper. Despite having a relatively poor 2021 season, he still attracts attention from the defense and that opens up other receivers. With him gone, all that focus is going to shift onto CeeDee Lamb. He might be able to win those matchups but it will be a lot more difficult than before.

We still have to wait and see if Cooper actually gets released for now. But under the assumption that he does, it would not be surprising to see a team like the Chiefs or the Rams go after him on a one year deal to try and win another ring. Wouldn’t be too surprising if Cooper himself wanted that too.
