Teams with new head coaches are set to start their offseason programs from Monday. The New York Giants are one of four teams beginning their offseason practice to get a head start on the new coaching style.
Brian Daboll who served as the offensive coordinator for the Buffalo Bills for four years has taken charge of the Giants as their new head coach after the team parted ways with Joe Judge.
“It’s really just introductory phases to our program” – Brian Daboll on starting the NY Giants’ offseason program
After spending almost two years in the COVID-altered offseasons, Brian Daboll is excited to have a normal spring for a change. “It was such a unique time for everyone,” Daboll said in a recent interview with SI.com’s Albert Breer. “[With] Zoom, you try to make it as personal as you can, but you’re trying to do things over a computer, and you’re finding different ways to teach on Zoom. It’ll be good to have an offseason that’s normal, where you’re face to face and communicating on a daily basis. The Zoom stuff, that’s become invaluable, heck, we’re using it now during the draft process, but other than that … no.”
Daboll is credited with the development of Bills QB Josh Allen who most scouts thought of as a “project” coming out of college. In Daboll’s 3rd year with the Bills, Allen set numerous passing records and the offense improved significantly that year. For his work, Daboll won the Associated Press NFL Assistant Coach of the Year Award for the 2020 season.
“The first thing is for the players to get into the weight room with the strength coaches and start their foundation in terms of getting stronger, quicker, faster,” Daboll says. “And then laying a foundation in the meantime for what we’re gonna do in the kicking game, on defense and on offense. It’s really just introductory phases to our program and how we’re gonna do things relative to strength and conditioning, and our playbook.”
The Giants were 4-13 in 2021 so Daboll has his work cut out for him in the offseason programs. Let’s see if this regime change for the NY Giants works in their favor or not!
