The San Francisco 49ers QB Brock Purdy’s historic rise to stardom was one of the least expected storylines during the 2022 regular season. The talented signal-caller took over the QB job after Jimmy Garoppolo got injured in a week 13 game against the Miami Dolphins and never looked back. Purdy started 5 games in the regular season and was named a finalist for the Offensive Rookie of the Year honors.

However, Brock Purdy’s monumental rise to the top has taken a temporary halt after the 23-year-old suffered an elbow injury during the NFC Championship game against the Philadelphia Eagles back in January. Purdy had to get elbow surgery and is currently recovering from the injury. The 6’1″ quarterback is expected to miss some time during the first half of the 2023 regular season.

Amidst this situation, the 49ers running Christian McCaffrey highly praised Brock Purdy’s ability to play the quarterback position with poise. During his recent appearance on the NFL Network show Good Morning Football, McCaffrey talked highly about his quarterback.

“He had poise, he had confidence, he [commanded] the huddle,” McCaffrey stated. “He did his job, and he made plays beyond the X’s and O’s. And that’s really all you want in a quarterback.”

“We had a lot of good weapons around him that he did such a good job utilizing. And obviously, we saw what he did on the field, but off the field, too, he’s such an impressive guy. He’s a guy you can rely on. He’s a great locker room guy, a good dude, and I had a lot of fun playing with him,” said Christian McCaffrey.

Following the injury to Brock Purdy, the former third overall pick Trey Lance was expected to take over the starter QB role of the San Francisco 49ers. However, the 49ers’ recent addition Sam Darnold is making it tough for the coaches per reports.

A long-time 49ers reporter described Sam Darnold as the best passer that the Niners ever had on their roster. Currently, both former first-round picks are battling for the starter role, but Lance reportedly has the advantage since he’s been playing for head coach Kyle Shanahan the last 2 seasons.

Nevertheless, if both of them failed to deliver big, Brock Purdy would likely take over the team whenever he returns to the field in 2023. Till then, Trey Lance will have a chance to prove himself as someone capable of leading an NFL franchise.
