Russell Wilson‘s career with the Denver Broncos didn’t go as anyone hoped for. From being a Pro Bowler to recording his worst NFL season with the Broncos in 2022, Wilson had high hopes for this season considering the addition of Sean Payton as the head coach. Though this season also started a bit slowly, the quarterback turned the tables around in the second half, leading Denver to a 7-8 season standing.

However, with just two games remaining in the season, the Broncos head coach officially announced the decision to bench the quarterback Wilson. This decision seemed quite abrupt to many analysts and fans.

Voicing his opinion, Emmanuel Acho defended QB Wilson against those who called him “corny“, “square” and “least authentic,” on Speak. He believes Wilson is the most misunderstood player in the league.

The former NFL linebacker said:

Recently, I think it was Kyle Brandt who called Russell Wilson the "least authentic" person in the National Football League. No! Russell Wilson is the most misunderstood player in the National Football League. I don't think Russell Wilson is inauthentic. If you know Rus or you know people who know Rus…Russell and I came into the National Football League in the same year. Rus is just misunderstood and people keep talking about Rus and he never talks back.

Acho urged the 35-year-old quarterback to tell his side of the story, as HC Payton and the Broncos are making their own narrative and it’s time that Wilson should come forward with his side:

Rus, tell your side of the story so that people have another side to believe. Cause otherwise you just got a whole bunch of people trying to get offense. And I can't keep defending you, Rus!

How did the Denver Broncos force Russell Wilson to get benched

After defeating the Kansas City Chiefs, the Broncos left Wilson with two choices, either to change this contract mid-season or get benched. Wilson said addressing the reporters:

We beat the Chiefs [in Week Seven] and they came up to me during the bye week and told me if I didn't change my contract, my injury guarantee, that I'd be benched for the rest of the year.

The Broncos had nine games left at that time, and with Wilson as the start, the team went on to win the next five games. His injury guarantees stated if the quarterback gets injured before the end of the season and fails the physical in March 2024, the franchise will give him $37 million.

To save that money, Denver decided to bench the quarterback as he refused to change the injury guarantee clause. And in the coming March 2024, Denver is most likely to release Wilson.
