As Myles Jack was sitting in his home during the offseason, waiting for a call to play football again, he would not have dreamed things would turn out differently. Just a few days after signing with the Philadelphia Eagles, the linebacker announced his retirement.

The former UCLA starter played six years for the Jacksonville Jaguars. He was part of the era in which the Jags’ defense was so mean that they received the nickname “Sacksonville.” The 27-year-old amassed 90 tackles (66 solo) during his time as their top defender.

Jack left the Steelers camp in March 2023 and became a free agent. As per Zach Berman of The Athletic, Jack even considered a career change and wanted to enroll in a trade school. However, his high school friend, Arizona Cardinals Safety Budda Baker, persuaded him to come train with him in Scottsdale.

During his three-month stay with Baker, he received a call from the Eagles general manager, Howie Roseman. Jack had a chance at redemption. A chance for redemption had arrived for Jack. He was on the flight to Philadelphia.

“That’s just how life goes,” he said, as per ESPN. “One week you’re on the couch, and the next week you’re playing with the NFC champions.”

Jack turned up for the trial at the Eagles facility, along with veteran linebacker Zach Cunningham. Despite training with the first team upon arrival, he fell down the pecking order quickly, while Cunningham progressed.

According to the Athletic, “Myles Jack doesn’t seem like a guaranteed contract at this point. Dean, Cunningham, and Christian Elliss, three linebackers, are roster locks.” Jack’s time with the Philadelphia Eagles came to an abrupt end.

He may have chosen to retire early, but Myles Jack leaves a legacy that even seasoned campaigners will envy. Undeniably, he is one of the most productive linebackers of his generation. In his 103 games, Jack completed 603 successful tackles. During his UCLA days, he was named an All-Pac 12 linebacker twice (in 2013 and 2014). He was also named the 2013 All-Pac 12 defensive freshman of the year.
