The San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance is putting in some extra work to take over his team in the absence of the 2022 rookie sensation Brock Purdy. During the 2023 off-season, Purdy is still recovering from the elbow injury he suffered back in January. On the other hand, Lance is working with the Kansas City Chiefs signal-caller Patrick Mahomes with a private QB coach.

The former third overall pick by the 49ers has improved a lot in the off-season thanks to the 2022 Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes. Lance practiced alongside the Chiefs QB Mahomes with the private QB coach Jeff Christensen. And now, the coach has revealed that working with Mahomes has helped the 23-year-old QB to improve his throwing motion.

“I said, ‘Watch this. Watch what he does here,’” Christensen told Matt Barrows of The Athletic.com. “It was something I was telling him to do that he wasn’t quite doing, and then he saw Patrick apply it perfectly. And I think that visual buy-in, that mental buy-in, helped him past that mental hump. And to his credit, he just kept getting better. [Over] the last seven days, every day was a substantial jump.”

Christensen went on to reveal that it took 4 days for him to notice what needed to change with Trey Lance, one of them being accuracy. And now with his new throwing motion, Lance reportedly doesn’t feel arm soreness despite practicing for hours. The QB coach also claimed that it could be weird in the beginning after changing the entire motion, but claims Lance is adjusting well to his new release.

There were a lot of questions surrounding Trey Lance’s career after Brock Purdy went berserk during the last few games of the 2022 season. But an unfortunate elbow injury to Purdy has given some breathing space for the 2021 third-overall pick.

The San Francisco 49ers signed Sam Darnold in free agency to add some depth to their quarterback position. Darnold is reportedly impressing a lot of coaches in the Niners camp but it’s highly likely Lance will end up as the QB No.1 during week 1 of the 2023 season.

The 2022 ‘Mr.Irrelevant’ Brock Purdy is expected to miss most if not the entire 2023 season since he’s still recovering from the surgery. So, Trey Lance, who is entering his third year in the league, will likely have the entire season to prove to the league that he is capable of leading an NFL franchise.

Lance’s mini-training camp with the Chiefs‘ 2-time All-Pro quarterback Patrick Mahomes will help him in a massive way to establish himself as a franchise signal-caller.
