“I think the Buccaneers are still in play” Skip Bayless claims Baker Mayfield should be playing in Tampa Bay for 2022

When the Cleveland Browns used the #1 overall pick in 2018 on Baker Mayfield, he was supposed to be one of the essential pieces in the rejuvenation of the team. For some time it seemed like the pick might actually work out but now, with the blockbuster trade for Deshaun Watson, Mayfield will be shown the door.

In his 4 seasons in Cleveland, Baker Mayfield has started 59 games and has a record of 29-30. In those 4 seasons, he’s never surpassed 4000 passing yards or 30 touchdowns. Along with that, he’s thrown more than 10 interceptions in all but 1 season. The stat line does not paint a pretty picture but in fairness, it would be difficult to do so given the Browns like to primarily run the ball.

Still, being more accurate and careful with the ball are major criticisms for Mayfield and were on full display in the 2021 season. Many argue that the fact that he was injured played a role in his throwing motion. While that may be true to an extent, he still has been inconsistent throughout his career.

The Browns were so ready to move on from Mayfield that they made a huge move for Deshaun Watson and gave him a massive contract despite all the issues he currently has. Skip Bayless shared his thoughts on the situation.

On a segment of Fox Sports’ ‘Undisputed’, Skip Bayless was quoted saying “The first problem for Baker Mayfield is that everybody has already committed to other quarterback options so this is a sticky situation for everyone involved because it is clear to the rest of the league that Cleveland is ready to cut bait. They have to remove the huge personality that is Baker Mayfield. The rest of the league doesn’t want to give anything because they know they’re desperate to get rid of him.”

Bayless further added “I believe they’re going to have to cut Baker Mayfield. The best thing that can happen to him is free him to pick his own destination. I still believe the Buccaneers are in play here. I don’t think Brady is going to be a Buccaneer for more than one year. They were already trying to come up with a plan B and I believe the Buccaneers are looking at Baker Mayfield as a viable long term option, post-Brady.”

What lies in store for Baker Mayfield truly is tough to predict as of now. Maybe he could be traded on draft day as teams don’t get the players they had planned for a freak injury during the regular season forces someone’s hand to make a trade. In terms of Tampa Bay, well, they need to keep an eye out because there’s no guarantee that Tom Brady is a Buccaneer in 2023.
