In a topsy-turvy season for the Pittsburgh Penguins, they have now done something that many teams had failed to do. Led by their inspirational captain, Sidney Crosby, the Penguins demolished the Colorado Avalanche 4-0. This brought an end to the Avs 15-game road win streak. This also turned out to be their first defeat of the season.

While the Penguins continued to struggle in their division, the Avs had been flying high. Before this defeat, they were one of the two sides still undefeated along with reigning champions Vegas Golden Knights. The Pittsburgh side showed off their class in this game and sent a reminder that they are still playoff contenders this season.

This also brought an end to their three-game losing streak. This convincing win saw them score four goals, with one from Crosby while they shutout the Avs in front of the fans at the PPG Paints Arena.

New signee Reilly Smith once again shined as he scored twice in the first period. This helped the Pens take a commanding lead. Goals from Lars Eller and Crosby in the second and third periods saw off a memorable win. On the other side of the Pens’ lineup, goalie Tristan Jarry made 31 stops to keep the visitors from scoring.

Avalanche coach Jared Bednar credits Penguins for emphatic win

The Pittsburgh Penguins are one of the most successful teams in the NHL. This puts extra pressure on them sometimes to perform better. This season they started out in the worst possible way they surrendered their two-goal lead and lost 4-2 to the Chicago Blackhawks in the opening game. They entered this game on a 2-4 record and were desperate for a good performance. Avalanche coach Jared Bednar has now credited them for that.

From the early proceedings, the Pens looked in menacing form and set out a platform to perform. Coach Bednar claimed they were the better side and his team failed to execute the plans they had been working on for this game.

"I think (we were) playing a desperate hockey team that played with lot of urgency. Even though our intent was OK, like I didn't feel we were sleeping or anything, I just felt like for the first 40 minutes, they were on point, physical competitive. We didn't execute through at all".
Jared Bednar as per ESPN.

The Penguins are now 6-2-0 against the Avs in their last meeting. This defeat is now a reality check for the 2021-22 Stanley Cup winners. They now have to regroup and plan again as they look to bounce back immediately against the Buffalo Sabres.

Meanwhile, the Penguins on the other hand would be hoping this is the start of a positive string of results. They are 3-4-0 for the season, second-bottom in their division. Their next encounter sees them take on the Ottawa Senators.
