After his remarkable triumph at this year’s US Open, Dominic Thiem is back on a similar momentum on his 5th ATP Finals tour in London. The Austrian sailed past the defending champion, Stefanos Tsitsipas in an immediate replay of last year’s ATP Finals championship match, at the first round of this year’s tour.

Thiem revealed that with all the restrictions posed by the Covid-19 protocols, it’s a difficult situation and his brother Moritz has proved to be a crucial asset being on the team that accompanied him to London.

Runner-up of the ATP Finals last year, Dominic Thiem arrived in London prior to the tournament along with brother Moritz, manager Herwig Straka and coach Nico Massu.

Expressing his gratitude for getting to play during a pandemic, the 27 year old Austrian also revealed the downside of spending time only between a hotel and a tennis court can get very ‘lonely‘.

However, Thiem is pleased about having brother Moritz on tour who is also a professional tennis player himself and is ensuring that his brother does not lose morale down at any moment.

“That the tournaments can take place despite the difficult circumstances is sensational,” Dominic Thiem said. “On the other hand, it can be very, very lonely. There is no change at all, just a hotel and a tennis court. This is why Moritz is also playing a key role in London these days: I’m delighted that he is there. We can spend time together, it ensures fun and entertainment,” he added.

The World No.3 had gone past the likes of Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Alexander Zverev before falling short against Stefanos Tsitsipas at last year’s ATP Finals. After being a Grand Slam champion for the first time this year, Thiem must be hoping to do better than last year to lift the trophy at the O2 Arena this time.

The Austrian will face World No.2, Rafael Nadal in his second match at the ATP Finals following a important win against Stefanos Tsitsipas on Sunday.
