Novak Djokovic withdraws from Madrid Open; leaves a message for his fans

Novak Djokovic, world number one has announced his decision to skip the Madrid Open 2021. The Serbian is the defending champion in Madrid, after he won the title in 2019, defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas in the finals.

Djokovic last played in his home tournament in Belgrade, where he was defeated in the semifinals by Aslan Karatsev. The Serbian has not had the best start to his clay court season, as he was also defeated in the third round of the Monte Carlo Masters by Dan Evans.

He is expected to play the Belgrade 2 Open, which will be held a week prior to the French Open. He is also expected to defend his crown at the Italian Masters, which will be held after the Madrid Masters.

Novak Djokovic’s message to his fans

Novak Djokovic left a message for his fans, after his decision to withdraw from the Madrid Masters. He hopes to be back next year in Madrid.

Sorry that I won’t be able to travel to Madrid this year and meet all my fans”, said Djokovic. “It’s been two years already, quite a long time. Hope to see you all next year!,” he added.

As a result of his withdrawal, Rafael Nadal now enters the Madrid Open as the top seed. The Spaniard reclaimed the world number two spot from Daniil Medvedev, after he claimed the Barcelona Open title last week, defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas in the finals.
