Olympic Qualification: USA, Russia, China and Japan to get an extra entry for Tokyo Olympics in Gymnastics

The FIG decided to give the extra spots due to prevailing circumstances caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) has given extra Olympic spots to the USA, Russia, China in the women’s category. In the men’s category, Japan takes the extra spot instead of the USA in the list of qualified countries. The decision was taken due to prevailing circumstances caused by COID-19. Due to the same, all the world cup events had to be canceled thereby enabling top nations to get that extra spot.

Out of the 4 world cup events planned only one had taken place. The other events in Europe could not be held due to restrictions of athletes from around the globe. Due to this the countries that performed well in the 2019 championship got the extra entry to the Olympics.

India’s qualification hopes

Dipa Karmakar

Dipa Karmakar would have been happier than many due to the postponement of the Olympics by a year. But things have changed upside down with the cancellation of the World Cup.

With the performances she had put up in Rio Olympics many would have had all eyes on Tokyo for her to perform better. She had become the first Indian gymnast to compete at an Olympics after 52 years, narrowly missed out on a podium spot in the vault competition after landing the famous and feared Produnova vault.
