Tokyo Olympics 2020, men’s football has kicked off a day ahead of the official opening ceremony of the games, and all of the participating countries have played their first group match. The teams will play a total of 3 games in the Group stages and the Top-2 at the end would reach the quarter finals of the tournament.
We take a look into the complete Round-up of the results after the first day’s play in men’s football category.
GROUP – A
MEXICO vs FRANCE: 4-1
Mexico earned the three points in their first encounter of the Olympic games with a whopping 4-1 victory over European giants France. The Mexicans won the match courtesy of second-half goals from Alexis Vega, Sebastian Cordova, Uriel Antuna and Erick Aguirre. France however, grabbed a goal through one of their experienced, overage players Andre-Pierre Gignac.
JAPAN vs SOUTH AFRICA: 1-0
Japan’s Olympics 2020 campaign in men’s football is off to a winning start, as Takefuso Kubo their star player scored the only goal of the match to hand the hosts all 3 points in their opening encounter. After the first round, Japan are behind Mexico in 2nd position and are in the race to qualify for the knockouts.
GROUP – B
NEW ZEALAND vs SOUTH KOREA: 1-0
New Zealand made history against South Korea, after the All whites earned their first victory ever at the Olympic Games. Veteran striker Chris Wood scored in the 70th minute to earn them all 3 points.
ROMANIA vs HONDURAS: 1-0
Romania also followed in the footsteps of New Zealand and claimed their first ever win at the Olympic games, by defeating a strong Honduras side to go joint top of the table with the All Whites. The Romanians were blessed with some good fortune as Elvin Oliva scored an own goal for the Hondurans.
GROUP- C
EGYPT vs SPAIN : 0-0
The Spanish team made a poor start to the tournament as they were held to a goalless draw despite having the most talented and experienced team on show at the Olympics this year. Dani Ceballos suffered a bad ankle injury as the Spanish lacked tooth in attack.
AUSTRALIA vs ARGENTINA: 2-0
Australia pulled off an outstanding victory against one of the bigger teams in World football- Argentina, as they won 2-0. Wales and Tillo scored the goals, which have put the Aussies in pole position in their Group C. Argentina are bottom of the group as things stand after the first match-day.
GROUP- D
BRAZIL vs GERMANY: 4-2
In a clash between two of the heavyweight teams of the Olympics this year, Brazil came out on top with a 4-2 victory. They would be thankful to Richarlison who scored a hattrick inside the first half an hour of the match to almost settle it for them. However, Germany came back strongly scoring 2 goals in the second half through Nadiem Amiri and Ragnar Ache. However, the Seleccaos sealed the win with a goal from Paulinho towards the end.
IVORY COAST vs SAUDI ARABIA: 2-1
Ivory Coast also won against Saudi Arabia in their first match by a margin of 2 goals to 1.
