Former World No.1 and 20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer stunned the tennis fraternity by announcing that he will be forced to undergo yet another knee surgery, owing to which he will be away from the game for many more months.

The Swiss maestro hasn’t been at his best after he made his return to the tour earlier in the year in Doha. Given his age and injuries, one wonders if Federer’s celebrated career is coming to an end.

As the many experts and former players started sending goodwill messages to Federer, World No.2 Daniil Medvedev too empathised with the 40-year-old.

“We all love watching him play. Hopefully, we can see him back on tour, because I think that’s what he wants. That’s what everybody wants. I wish him a speedy recovery,” the Russian told the press in Cincinnati.

However, Medvedev who is known for his feisty and aggressive character on the court also recently added that whenever Federer does return to top level competition, the roster will be ready to beat him.

“Even if he will be back on tour, we will try to beat him every time we play him, because even if it’s Roger, we are still competitors on the court. But the only thing I can wish him right now is health,” the 25-year-old opined.

Both Federer and Medvedev have met twice on the ATP tour. Currently, it’s the Swiss player who leads the Russian by a 3-0 margin. Their last meeting took place at the Miami Masters in 2019.
