Premier League: Southampton vs Aston Villa player ratings as Southampton clinch an easy 1-0 win

Ralph Hasenhüttl’s Southampton played a clinical Premier League encounter against Dean Smith’s Aston Villa at St. Mary’s Stadium. It was one exciting encounter as the two teams were in desperate need of those three points.

Luck favoured the brave and it did incase for Southampton as Villa defender Matty Cash couldn’t clear a long ball which resulted in Adam Armstrong receiving a fine rebound. He doesn’t miss out on those and he finished it cleanly in the bottom left corner to provide the 1-0 lead to Southampton in just the third minute.

The match pretty much went on to be a dull one as there were no goals following that. There were some gallantry attempts by both the teams but Southampton clinched an easy win.

Alex McCarthy (GK)(7.5/10) : McCarthy stood as a wall for the Southampton goal and guarded it with sheer determination. He made bunch of really good saves that earned him that clean sheet.

Tino Livramento (7.4/10) : Livramento was super quick with his feet as he did a phenomenal job in the defence. He won back to back tackles and interceptions and also did a commendable job at winning ground duels.

Jan Bednarek (7/10) : Jan made some really valuable clearences in the defence and didn’t seem to be hesitant at taking on aerial duels, which he won with ease.

Mohammed Salisu (7.3/10) : Salisu was involved in the game even while making a run forward. He did a really god job by coordinating well with his defence unit and also had one of his goal attempts blocked in the Villa box by their defenders.

Kyle Walker-Peters (6.5/10) : A below par performance by Kyle Walker-Peters. He didn’t win a single ground duel that he attempted and also lost possession on 14 occasions.

Stuart Armstrong (6.5/10) : Just the 56 minutes for Stuart Armstrong. In that short stint he managed to bag a huge goal scoring opportunity which he missed by going off target.

James Ward-Prowse (7.6/10) : The captain was undoubtedly the best player for the Saints. He had a 91% passing accuracy with four key passes being involved. He also had one of his attempts on target but denied by the goalkeeper.

Oriol Romeu (7.3/10) : Oriol wasn’t too shy at challenging ground and aerial duels as he managed to challenge on multiple occasions and win almost every duel. He later had a shy at goal but went off target.

Mohamed Elyounoussi (6/10) : A below performance by Mohamed Elyounoussi. Out of twelve ground duel challenges, he just won two. He also lost possession on as many as eighteen occasions.

Adam Armstrong (7.2/10) : Armstrong received a fine rebound from the edge of the box after Cash couldn’t clear a long ball with Adams lurking. He then lashed it clean and true onto the volley and into the bottom left corner. He gave a fantastic lead to Southampton in just the third minute.

Che Adams (7.3/10) : A 100% winning rate at ground duels as well as having an excellent passing accuracy did the trick in the game for Che Adams. He also had two attempts at goal but converted neither.

Emiliano Martínez (GK) (6.8/10) : Emiliano did all he could to keep the ball clear away from the box and made such good saves. However a mishap in the defence box created at opportunity for Southampton to score.

Matty Cash (7.5/10) : What a game for Matty Cash, despite being a huge part of the opening goal. Cash’s foot were on fire. He was super quick with his feet helping him win a bunch of Interceptions and tackles.

Axel Tuanzebe (6.4/10) : A pretty average performance by the defender. He did well on occasions in the defence but his performance was as impactful as expected.

Tyrone Mings (6.8/10) : The captain has been leading with an example, right from the word go. He made as many as twelve clearences to clear the ball and keep it away from the box.

Matt Targett (6.9/10) : Matt did a really god job with defence and he followed his confidence to taking on aerial duels which he won with sheer comfort. A confident performance indeed.

John McGinn (6.7/10) : John did a fine job at winning the ball from ground duels. He also had a shy at goal but he was way off target to even think of converting it into a goal.

Marvelous Nakamba (7/10) : Marvelous just managed to get 63 minutes of gameplay and in that he made a fair and decent contribution in the defence and in the midfield.

Leon Bailey (6.8/10) : Leon certainly had couple of goal scoring attempts, did a decent job at ground duels but he lost possession of the ball on as many as 21 occasions, which is a lot.

Emi Buendía (7.8/10) : Buendía had three good attempts at goal off which two were way off target and neither of them converted. He seemed to be one of the fearless to take on challenges as he won plenty of ground duels.

Anwar El Ghazi (6.4/10) : A very decent game overall against Southampton. There were a couple of good attempts while also having kept on losing possession every now and then.

Ollie Watkins (7.2/10) : Two off target attempts is what Ollie got in totality. He did win a major amount of Aerial duels but he didn’t get to convert his attempts in a goal.
