Olympic Games silver medalist PV Sindhu will now be training at the Gachibowli Stadium in Hyderabad after moving out from the Pullela Gopichand Academy, her father PV Ramana said. Ramana is a former international volleyball player himself and he made it clear that the change in her place of training was only due to psychological reasons and not due to a rift with Pullela Gopichand.
Sindhu has not yet qualified for the Tokyo Olympic Games but she looks almost certain to secure a berth in the same. She is now also set to train under Park Tae Sang, a Korean coach who has taken over from another Korean Kim Ji Hyun who quit in 2019. The 25-year-old hasn’t been in the best of form after disappointing outings in Thailand and she will look to get back to form sooner rather than later.
No split with Pullela Gopichand
PV Ramana spoke to IANS about Sindhu’s decision and clarified that there was no split with Pullela Gopichand. “She hasn’t split with Gopichand, but wants to train in an ambience that gives her a feel as if she is training in an Olympic arena. The change of venue is with the approval of the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and in coordination with the Badminton Association of India (BAI),” he said.
On being asked about training partners for Sindhu, Ramana said, “He [Sang] will take a call on that issue.” Speaking then about her fitness, “Her fitness is okay. She is training in the pool. She is also going to gym twice a week,” he said and signed off.
