South Africa vs Pakistan: Quinton de Kock’s run-out of Fakhar Zaman divides opinion; MCC clarifies

Quinton de Kock after running out Fakhar Zaman

Fakhar Zaman came up with a stunning knock for Pakistan in the second ODI against South Africa at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg as he nearly pulled off a stiff chase single-handedly. Chasing 342 to win and take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series, none of the Pakistan batters was able to get going along with the opener as he ran out of partners and eventually got himself run out, meaning South Africa leveled the series.

Fakhar’s run-out was controversial as it saw South African wicket-keeper Quinton de Kock pointing at the bowler’s end while the batsman was running towards him. The same seemed to distract the left-handed batsman who lost concentration and stopped for a bit before being caught short by a direct-hit. It was the last over and the match was already lost but Fakhar was unable to get to his second career double century in ODIs.

The Marylebone Cricket Club which is responsible for rule making in cricket clarified the incident and wrote, “The Law is clear, with the offence being an ATTEMPT to deceive, rather than the batsman actually being deceived. It’s up to the umpires to decide if there was such an attempt. If so, then it’s Not out, 5 Penalty runs + the 2 they ran, and batsmen choose who faces next ball.”

Meanwhile, South African spinner Tabraiz Shamsi defended de Kock and stated that he did not mean to distract the batsman. He wrote, “Just 2 clarify. QDK was NOT speaking 2 or pointing at the batsman,he was asking a fielder to back up at the non strikers end. Not Quinnys fault the batman turned around 2 see instead of completing the run safely which he should have done. Stop the hate n Leave QDK alone (sic).”
