Rafael Nadal, who claimed his record-extending 13th Roland Garros last year to equal Roger Federer ‘s feat of 20 Grand Slams, has been honored with yet another award for his acts that go even beyond the sport. The tennis World No.2 has been bestowed with the Sport Values Award in the male category, for his contributions both on and off the tennis court.
The Sport Values Awards gala is organized by the newspaper ‘SPORT’ and Prensa Iberica. At the ceremony, Albert Saez, the director of the newspaper described the awards as those which were created to recognize athletes who show values that go beyond their victories on the fields and that deserve to be applauded by everyone who loves sport.
Rafa Nadal must have lost count of awards won
Rafael Nadal’s on-court and off-court achievements have been acknowledged by many different organizations and publications in recent months. In October, the Spaniard was awarded the Grand Cross of the Royal Order of Sporting Merit, Spain’s highest sporting distinction. A month later, he was bestowed with a similar honor by the Madrid government and a few days after that he received the AS’ Sports Solidarity award.
Towards the end of the year, Rafa Nadal received two more honors – the DEX Legend award by El Desmarque, and the 2020 Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award by the ATP, which marked the third consecutive time for Nadal to claim it and the fourth time in his overall career.
Nadal was also at the forefront of various fund-raising initiatives during the COVID-19 pandemic and the charitable work he undertook through his foundation, Rafa Nadal Academy based in Mallorca, Spain as well as in India. In a year that was ravaged by the COVID-19 pandemic, Nadal did not step back from his true nature of helping the ones in need always. For which, the Spaniard was awarded the CEU Angel Herrera Award in the Ethics and Values category in mid-December.
