If Justin Jefferson wants to take the next step in his evolution as a great wide receiver, then he must listen to his predecessor Randy Moss’ advice. After overcoming cancer, Moss answered several questions during his first public interview.

The NFL Hall of Famer who rocked the football as a Minnesota Viking sat down with TMZ’s Michael Babcock and shared some interesting takes. One of them was about the current Viking, Justin Jefferson.

Moss believes JJ boasts every tool in his shed to surpass every other receiver and reach the status of GOAT.

I’m a big fan of Justin [Jefferson], and the reason why is because I’ve always been a fan of a complete football player where you can score from anywhere on the field, and Justin brings that to the table.

Randy Moss told TMZ

Jefferson’s numbers are impeccable despite playing with quarterbacks that fans will think twice before calling elite. The LSU product logged 1000+ yards every year since entering the league like clockwork—1400+ yards on four separate occasions—and was well on his way to recording a personal best year in 2023 before injuring himself in week 10. Jefferson still crossed 1000 yards by averaging 107.4 yards per game.

Those numbers are absurd, and rightfully, the Vikings made him the highest-paid WR in NFL history with a four-year, $140 million contract extension ($35 million per year) until his former LSU buddy, Ja’Marr Chase, got the bag in Cincinnati to snatch the title.

Randy Moss explained how Justin Jefferson can become the GOAT wide receiver

Moss played 14 years in the NFL, calling time on his career in 2012. The league has changed since then, and it hasn’t gone unnoticed by the eagle-eyed maestro.

Receivers’ preferences have shifted from waiting for the pass close to the end zone to YAC (yards after catch). Moss doesn’t see anything wrong with it, but at the same time, he pointed out that if Jefferson wants to reach the GOAT status, then he must score more touchdowns.

When you look at the overall picture of how they changed the game, you take less runs out of the game, so you’re throwing the ball [even more]. For [JJ] to go down as the greatest Vikings and arguably the greatest wide receiver to ever do it, I think I need to see more of Justin getting in that box [for touchdowns].

Moss argued

There’s hardly anyone better than the 48-year-old to explain the importance of scoring touchdowns. He still holds the single-season receiving touchdowns record with 23 (his first year with Tom Brady at the New England Patriots). Davante Adams came close to touching that record, but he stopped at 18 in 2020 at Green Bay.

Jefferson has scored 10 touchdowns (TDs) twice in his career. Most recently, he achieved this last year while receiving passes from Sam Darnold, who signed with the Seattle Seahawks during the summer. This change has opened the door for second-year quarterback JJ McCarthy, whose rookie season was hampered by injuries.

Jefferson is looking forward to playing with McCarthy, a college football champion in 2023, before the Vikings drafted him in the following draft.

I’m excited for J.J. … I’m definitely expecting a lot from him.

Jefferson said in a promotional video for his football camp at IMG Academy. (H/T: Heavy)

Despite the optimism, the Vikings must adopt a cautious approach for the 2025 season. Sharp Football Analyst accredited the NFC North franchise with the fifth hardest schedule that includes fixtures against last season’s playoff teams, the Eagles, Ravens, Chargers, Packers, Commanders, Seahawks, and Lions.
