Wrestling: UWW Rome ranking series starts today, Ravi Dhaiya to play in non-Olympic category

The season 2020’s first wrestling event UWW ranking series is starting today. Top Indian wrestler, likes of Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia and Deepak Punia will spearhead the Indian challenge. All of them are top medal prospect for Tokyo Olympics in their category.

A good result at these ranking series will boost their ranking before Olympics. Which will also help them to get better draw during Tokyo 2020. Deepak Punia, Vinesh Phogat are starting this event as top seed and will be hoping to win gold medal here. But competition at this event will be tough as 30 World Championship 2019 medalist are taking part.

Ravi Dhaiya who won Olympic quota in 57kg after winning bronze at World Championship. He has surprised everyone by pulling out of 57kg freestyle category and now he will compete in 61kg, which is a non Olympic category. He took this decision because he did not wanted to reduce weight twice in a month. He will play in 57kg at Asian Championship in Delhi.

This event is scheduled from 15th to 18 January. On day one Greco Roman wrestler will start their campaign. All matches of any category will be played on a single day. Here is Indian squads for the event.

Women – Nirmala Devi (50 kg); Vinesh Phogat (53 kg); Anshu Malik (57 kg); Sonam (62 kg); Divya Kakran (68 kg); and Kiran (76 kg).

Men’s freestyle – Ravi Dahiya (62 kg); Bajrang Punia (65 kg); Jitender (74 kg); Deepak Punia (86 kg); Satyawrat Kadian (97 kg); and Sumit Malik (125 kg).

Greco Roman – Gyanender Dahiya and Sachin Rana (60 kg); Ashu (67 kg); Gurpreet Singh and Sajan (77 kg); Sushil Kumar (87 kg); Hardeep Singh (97 kg); and Naveen (130 kg).
