On Monday, Sania Mirza brought home country’s first-ever Fed Cup Heart Award in Asia/Oceania category. Out of 16,985 votes, she got 10,000+ votes cast for this year’s three regional Group I nominees.

The winners of Fed Cup Heart Award were determined through online voting by fans which went on for a week starting from May 1. From each category, the winners were awarded by USD 2,000 prize money.

Since 2016, Sania’s return to Fed Cup action for the first time and India booked their place in the Fed Cup Play-offs.

After winning the award she dedicated the award to the country and pledged to donate the prize money to Telangana Chief Minister’s Relief Fund to aid the fight against coronavirus.

Sania said in a tweet, “It’s an honor to win the Fed Cup Heart Award as the first Indian & the first person from the subcontinent. This award for the entire country and to all my fans and thank everyone for voting for me.”

In another tweet, she said, “I want to donate the money that I get from this award to the Telangana Chief Minister’s Relief Fund as the world is going through very difficult times with the virus.”

Further, Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju also retweeted her tweet and while praising her efforts he said, “Congratulations Sania Mirza on becoming the First Indian to win Fed Cup Heart award!
The award is a befitting recognition of your hard work and the distinction that you have shown on court making India proud”

The Fed Cup Heart Award was launched in 2009 by International Tennis Federation (ITF) to recognise those Fed Cup players who represent their countries with distinction, show exceptional courage on the court, and demonstrate outstanding commitment to the ideals of the competition.

From Europe/Africa, Estonia’s Anett Kontaveit and Fernanda Contreras Gomez of Mexico triumphed over Paraguay’s Veronica Cepede Royg from the Americas region have won the Cup.
