Former World and four time Asian championship medalist Shiva Thapa(63kg) and World Championship Silver medalist Sonia Lather(57kg) reached semifinal of Strandja Memorial Boxing Tournament to assured themselves of medals in Sofia, Bulgaria.
Thapa got better of Ireland’s George Bates in his quarterfinal clash and this will be his first medal at this event in three appearance.
In 57kg category Sonia Lather won the hard fought battle over Michaela Walsh of Ireland by split verdict 3-2. Later both these boxer were joined by Mohammed Hassamuddin, who won silver at commonwealth games also in 2017 edition of this event. He outpunched Kurt Walker by unanimous decision to secule himself a medlal.
However in women’s 51kg, defending champion Nikhat Zareen bowed out after losing to Christina Cruz by split decision 2-3. Zareen, the junior world champion had claimed gold in last edition of this event.
In semifinals, Shiva Thapa will face Lasha Guruli of Georgia and Mohamed Hussamuddin will face Mykola Butsenko of Ukrine. While Sonia Lather will be up against Luliia Tsyplakova of Ukraine. All three are strong contender to book their place in finals.
