‘Shooter Dadi’ Chandro Tomar passes away due to Covid-19

The dreaded COVID-19 pandemic has been wreaking havoc in India and it claimed another life from the sporting world as 89-year-old Chandro Tomar, a veteran shooter who was affectionately called ‘Shooter Dadi’ passed away due to complications resulting from the disease. It has been reported that she contracted the virus on the 27th of April and within two days, her condition deteriorated.

It is noteworthy that the Bollywood movie “Saand ki Aankh” in 2019 was inspired by the lives of Chandro Tomar and Prakashi Tomar who is affectionately called ‘Revolver Dadi’. The movie was well received by critics and audiences alike and it brought to Chandro Tomar to the limelight for her incredible achievements and the way she overcame patriarchy to take up shooting a long time ago.

Aviation minister Hardeep Singh Puri condoles Chandro Tomar’s demise

Aviation minister Hardeep Singh Puri took to Twitter today to condole the demise of Chandro Tomar. He wrote, “An epitome of gender equality & champion of women’s rights Smt Chandro Tomar, known as ‘Shooter Dadi’ by her fans and admirers is no more.The courage with which she challenged patriarchy and took up shooting as a sport will inspire generations to come. Condolences to her family.”
