Yet another tragic news has shaken the Indian shooting fraternity as aspiring shooter Konica Layak has died by suicide. The 26-year-old was found hanging in her hostel room at Bally neighbourhood in Howrah. Police sources shared that a handwritten note was found inside the hostel room.
The note, apparently signed by the shooter, indicates that she committed suicide and it is being speculated that performance-related issues led her to take such a drastic step. Layak sought forgiveness from her parents in the note which was found. The police are yet to confirm it was a suicide as it awaits the handwriting analysis report of the note.
Konica Layak’s death is the fourth suicide by an Indian shooter this year
Konica Layak’s passing is the fourth suicide incident in 4 months by an Indian shooter. state-level shooters Khushseerat Kaur Sandhu, Hunardeep Singh Sohal & Namanveer Singh Brar too had died by suicide. Layak has won four gold medals at the state level.
The shooter hailing from Jharkhand hit the news when she missed the national championship as she did not have a rifle. Layak took to Twitter to ask actor Sonu Sood for help. Konika Layak wrote in her appeal, “I have won a silver and a gold medal in the 11th Jharkhand State Rifle Shooting Championship. However, the government has not helped me at all. Please help me with a rifle Please help.“
Sood, who has been in the news for his philanthropic efforts during the pandemic was more than happy to help. The actor gifted her a gifted Rs 2.7 Lakh German rifle.
Konica was training with former Olympian and Arjuna Award winner Joydeep Karmakar in Kolkata. Joydeep shares that she was irregular over the past couple of weeks. “This is shocking news to all of us. She was doing okay in practice but of late she was missing her sessions a lot due to one reason or the other,” Joydeep told Tribune. “She was to get married soon. I don’t really know what happened or forced her to take this step. We are heartbroken.”
