Currently ranking number 5 in the world, WTA player and Ukrainian youngster and tennis sensation, Elina Svitolina is less than excited about the scenario of tennis return.
When questioned about the fear of contracting the virus, and whether she would like to participate with strictly defined rules, she was much apprehensive about it.
“As I said before, the conditions are being quite strict and there are things that very few people like. According to the rule, if anyone gets sick or has any symptoms, the tennis player could be eliminated from any round, isolated there for fourteen days and without being in contact with absolutely No one. We will see over the days how things evolve. I hope everything goes well and returns to normal as soon as possible.”
And how has her training session been? Is she really ready for mega, Grand-Slam kind of events? “I have been training a lot in recent weeks and little by little I am recovering sensations. I have played a few weeks ago some exhibition games in Switzerland and in Berlin. It is good that preparatory tournaments of this type are appearing in order to pick up pace. They are contests of eight or nine tennis players and without spectators, so the risk of catching it is much less. I already want the competition to return and we can compete for the important tournaments.”
Also, she believes that playing without being rewarded ranking points wouldn’t really be as appealing. To quote her: “If there are no points in a tournament, I don’t know if it makes sense to go and play because the conditions are enough If you need to spend so much time in isolation, this also plays a big role. I know that there will be more meetings, that this will be decided in the coming weeks.”
Will tennis be ever played as it used to, with innumerable crowds thronging the stadia to watch a face-off between the greats of the game? The unending and longest games be ever played again? Records be broken anytime soon? Well, there are questions that are on everyone’s minds right now. Who’ll answer them? Only time can!
