On Friday Tennis Channel said that Sofia Kenin and Bianca Andreescu will be among the 16 women players to compete in Charleston next month in the largest event held since the season was derailed in mid-March by the COVID-19 crisis.
The Credit One Bank Invitational, which will be aired on the Tennis Channel and will begin in 23 June, will be held without fans in an effort to stem the spread of the novel coronavirus,
American Kenin, who was this year’s Australian Open, and Canada’s Andreescu, the 2019 US Open Champion, will be a part of this.
With Americans Medison Keys and Bethanie Mattek-sands serving as captain, the 16 players will be divided into 2 teams. This tournament will feature 16 single matches and eight doubles contests.
Mattek-sands showed her all enthusiasm by tweeting “let’s do this!!” On friday.
With former world No.1 Victoria Azarenka, 2017 US Open Champion -Sloane Stephens and 2016 Olympic Gold medallist Monica Puig with other players slated to participate.
The field is going to be completed by Americans Amanda Anisimova, Jennifer Brady, Danielle Collins, Emma Navarro, Alison Riske and Shelby Rogers along with Canadians Eugenie Bouchard and Leylah Fernandez and Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic.
As Charleston host the WTA’s Volvo Car Open annually in early April, the organizers will force this year to cancel the event due to the pandemic.
