Sonam crushed Sakshi in rematch for Olympic qualifiers


Second selection trial for Olympic qualifiers gave Sakshi Malik to fulfill her Olympic dream but Sonam defeated Sakshi Malik 3-2 on Wednesday in the 62kg trials for Asian Olympic Qualifiers. With the loss, the 2020 Asian Championships silver medallist Olympic dreams ended.

Before today Sonam defeated Sakshi in selection trials in January but she could not perform as per expectation. WFI decided to held tials for three Olympic category today 62kg and 76kg in women’s wrestling and 60kg in greco roman.

Sonam first played against Radhika and won 5-1. In the semi-final, she overcame New Delhi held Asian Championships 59kg gold medallist Sarita. 3-1.

Sakshi, on the other hand, had a strong start to her trials. The Rio Olympic bronze medallist defeated Seema 8-2 in the last eight. It was followed by a technical superiority win against Mansi in the semi-finals.

Sonam will be India’s official entry for 62kg category in Asian Olympic Qualifiers which will be hosted at Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan next month.

The trials were held for 76kg women and 60kg Greco-Roman too.

In the 76kg and 60kg, Kiran and Gyanendra have retained their spot in the Indian team and will now start preparing for the upcoming qualifiers.
