Speculations arises over Tokyo Olympics after senior official hints at cancellation of Games

As it is less than hundred days for the upcoming Summer Olympics in Tokyo. The senior Japanese ruling party official on Thursday said that Olympics being cancelled still remains an option if coronavirus is too dire.

While the Tokyo organising committee responded that they are fully focused and hosting the games in summer.Toshihiro Nikai secretary general of the Liberal Democratic party said  “If it seems impossible (to host the Olympics) any more, then we have to stop it, decisively,” 

Cancellation is “of course” an option, he said, adding: “If the Olympics were to spread infection, then what are the Olympics for?” said Nikai. As Japan is in the middle of a fourth wave of coronavirus hosting the games is an very unpopular opinion among the public .

The Government and organising Officals have consistently said the Games would go ahead.

“Organizing committee President Seiko Hashimoto was asked at a news conference if there were any conditions under which the Olympics would be cancelled.

We do not speculate,” an International Olympic Committee spokesperson said on Thursday. “We are fully concentrated and committed to the successful delivery of the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 this year, and working at full speed towards the opening ceremony on July 23.”

There are a variety of concerns but as the Tokyo 2020 organizing committee we are not thinking about cancelling the games,” Hashimoto said.

The questions come as the general secretary of ruling LDP political party and the No. 2 in charge, Toshihiro Nikai, raised the possibility the day before.

As on Thursday, Japan’s second-largest metropolitan area of Osaka recorded 1,208 new cases. It was the third straight day that new cases surpassed 1,000. Tokyo hit 729, its highest total in more than two months.

Japan has attributed 9,500 death to COVID-19, good by world standards but poor by results in Asia. Vaccine rollout in Japan has also been very slow with fewer than 1% having received the vaccine.
