Last couple of years have been a struggle for Kerber. The former World no.1 and two time winner of this event, the Stuttgart Open, in 2015 and 2016 has seen her ranking drop out of the top 50. Kerber started the year by reaching the Semi-finals of the Grampians Trophy.

Since then she has played a handful of tournaments and mostly struggled through them all. Her last appearance was at the Miami Masters where she was beaten in the round of thirty-two by Victoria Azarenka. Her first round opponent here is Ekaterine Gorgodze.

Gorgodze is twenty nine and mostly plays in the ITF’s. She has till date never been able to qualify into the main draw of a Grand Slam event. In the Stuttgart open she beat Indy De Vroome in the first qualifier and Anna-Lena Friedsam in the second qualifier to qualify into the third round of the event.

Kerber has won three out of the four slams. The only slam that she has not won is the French Open, but she was the Quarter-finalist at the French Open twice. Unless the little known Gorgodze pulls off something impossible, it’s hard to imagine  this match going into a third set.
