Maria Sharapova is a former World No. 1 and a former flagbearer of Russian tennis. She was born to Yuri Sharapov and Yelena on 19 April 1987 in Nyagan, then known as Russian SFSR. Having turned Pro in 2001, she was a formidable force on the Tour and stamped her authority as a teenager. She sat on the top of the rankings for 21 weeks during her career before retiring in 2020.
