British teenage sensation Emma Radcanu’s dream run at 2021 Wimbledon came to a crushing end in the fourth round after she was forced to retire from the match midway due to breathing issues.
The young Radcanu took the court against Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic but was forced to leave the court for medical attention. Unfortunately, the 18-year-old never managed to return, owing to which her opponent qualified for the quarterfinals.
“I am actually shocked because Emma must be hurt if she came to the decision to retire,” Tomljanovic said in a sympathetic on-court interview.
“I can’t imagine being in her shoes at 18 playing a fourth round in your home country. I am really sorry for her, I wish we could have finished it. I am wishing her all the best. I thought I found my groove although Emma was hurt and not at her best which kind of explains it.”
Tomljanovic to meet Barty in the quarters of Wimbledon
Tomljanovic will take on another Australian and World No.1 Ash Barty in the quarterfinals later in the day. Interestingly, the two have never met on the WTA tour will now.
“It didn’t really sink in I’m in the quarters because of the circumstances. I am thrilled to play Ash, and to have two Aussies in the quarter-finals is great for everyone back home,” the World No.75 added.
This will be the first Grand Slam quarterfinals of Tomljanovic’s career. Earlier in the tournament, the Australian also got into a heated argument with former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko as they met in the third round. Tomljanovic accused Ostapenko of playing dirty while the former was serving to close out the match.
As most of you might be aware, Tomljanovic is also the girlfriend of Italian player Matteo Berrettini. The couple have been spotted regularly spending time with each other on and off the court. The big-serving Berrettini was also seen supporting his girlfriend from her box, when she took on the British sensation Radcanu on Monday.
