World No. 3 Alexander Zverev has long been waiting for his maiden Grand Slam title. The German had reached the finals of the 2020 US Open and made a good start winning the first two sets against Austrian Dominic Thiem. He however failed to hold on to his lead as Thiem made a thrilling comeback to win the next 3 sets and also his maiden Grand Slam.

Since then, Zverev has not made it to another Grand Slam final. In the 2021 season, he made it to the semi-finals of the French Open and the US Open, the quarter-finals of the Australian Open and reached the 4th round of the Wimbledon Championships. While these might be good results on paper, the German is not satisfied and wishes only for a Grand Slam title.

Speaking on the German’s chances, 16-time Grand Slam doubles champion, Australia’s Todd Woodbridge had some opinions of his own on the German’s chances at winning a Slam next season after a fabulous display in the 2021 season.

We’re going to see Alexander Zverev win a Grand Slam and the Australian Open could be that. He has matured as a player, he now understands what it takes to win seven games in the best of five sets,” said Woodbridge, one of the most successful doubles players who has also won 6 Mixed Doubles Slam and an Olympics Gold in men’s doubles.

Zverev won titles at the Acapulco Open, the Madrid Masters, the Cincinnati Masters, the Vienna Open and capped it off with his 2nd career title at the ATP Finals. Earlier in the year, he also managed to win the singles gold at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, ending Germany’s wait of 29 years for a tennis gold.

With a successful outing in 2021, it might actually be the German’s chance in 2022 to land the biggest prize in the sport of tennis.
