World No. 6 and the 4th seeded Alexander Zverev from Germany defeats France’s Jeremy Chardy to make it to the semi-finals of the Men’s Singles at the Tokyo Olympics 2020. Zverev needed just 66 minutes to wrap up the match 6-4, 6-1 against a surprise quarter-finalist Chardy.

Zverev gave one of his finest performances of his week in the Olympics as he registered yet another straight-set victory. Zverev hit 11 aces and committed a solitary double fault while Chardy had 4 aces and 3 double faults. Zverev did not concede a single break-point opportunity in the entire match while winning the 4/12 break-points he had created for himself.

Zverev was clinical in the errors as well, making 16 forced and 8 unforced errors while Chardy had 18 forced and 17 unforced errors during the match. Zverev did not move much towards the net, going for only 8 points of which he won 5. Alexander wrapped up the match with 61 points while Chardy could manage only 39.

Zverev was also part of the Men’s Doubles team with Jan-Lennard Struff but the pair was defeated by Americans Tennys Sandgren and Austin Krajicek in the quarter-finals. The German Mixed Doubles team of Laura Siegemund and Kevin Krawietz are scheduled to play in their quarter-final clash against Serbians Novak Djokovic and Nina Stojanovic.

Zverev stands a good chance to become just the fourth German man to win an Olympic medal provided he progresses into the finals or wins the Bronze Medal match. Nevertheless, the 25-year old has surely enjoyed a great run at his debut Olympic Games making it to the final stages of both the events he participated in.

Alexander will now be up against World No. 1 and the top-seeded Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals in what will be their 9th career meeting and 3rd meeting of the year, last clashing in the quarter-finals of the 2021 Australian Open where the Serbian won on his way to his 9th Australian Open title.
