‘It’s been an absolute privilege to represent my country at 4 Olympics,’ Andy Murray pens down an emotional message after Tokyo Olympics exit

2-time Olympic gold medalist, Andy Murray‘s campaign at the Tokyo Olympics ended on Wednesday after he, alongwith Joe Salisbury got knocked out in the quarterfinal of the men’s doubles event. The Croat pairing of Marin Cilic and Ivan Dodig defeated the British pair in three sets 4-6,7-6(2),10-7.

Murray withdrew from the singles event too, and hence his Tokyo 2020 campaign is over and for the first time in 9 years, he won’t be returning with a medal. The Brit expresses his disappointment via social media.

“I feel crushed after todays loss. Sport can be brutal. Thanks so much @joesalisbury92 for the opportunity to play. You were brilliant. I wish it could have gone a little better but shit happens,” Murray wrote.

“And if this is the end of my Olympics journey I want to say a huge thanks to @TeamGB and all the tennis support team for everything they have done to help me perform at my best over the years. It’s been an absolute privilege to represent you and my country at 4 Olympics and it’s given me some of the best memories of my life.”

‘I don’t know if I’ll get the opportunity to play again’: Andy Murray

Talking about his Paris 2024 prospects, Andy Murray said he isn’t sure whether he will be able to compete in another Olympics or not. “I don’t know. I don’t know if I’ll get the opportunity to play again,” he said when asked if he would appear at a fifth Olympics in Paris in 2024. “I love every minute of playing the Olympics. I wish that today would have gone differently. I had another chance with Joe to win a medal. We were so close and that is just disappointing.”

“There was some stuff I wish I could have done at the end of the match to try and help out more. But yeah, very disappointing.”

Murray will now regroup himself and recover for the American hard court season and is expected to play the qualifiers at the US Open.
