“Ash Barty needs to improve” Coach Craig Tyzzer demands more from the World No. 1

Coach of World No. 1 Ash Barty, Craig Tyzzer believes there is still a room of improvement in Barty's game and explains why she can't win the US Open.

World No. 1 Ash Barty had a fantastic outing at her home slam as she went on to win the 2022 Australian Open and did it in some style, winning the title without dropping a set and her service broken only 3 times during her 7-match run at the tournament where she was the heavy favourite and she proved her tag.

Becoming only the 5th active player and the 2nd active woman to have majors across all 3 surfaces, Barty is currently untouchable on the court and she maintained her high level of play throughout the fortnight. With 3 majors already in her trophy cabinet, many believe the 25-year old Barty to be one of the most complete players on the Tour as she is winning on the Tour as well.

Despite her success that includes Barty finishing as the World No. 1 for 3 consecutive years now, Barty’s coach Craig Tyzzer still thinks there is room for improvement in his student who for a layman looks unbeatable every time she steps on the court and is already 11-0 this season having won both the singles and doubles title in WTA-500 event in Adelaide before she began her Australian Open campaign.

“There are still areas we are working on and she needs to improve. I won’t tell you which ones because I would reveal too many secrets, but she still has room for improvement. What I think she does best of all is that she enjoys herself. She enjoys playing. For example, tonight we knew of the pitfalls Danielle Collins would bring.

“How do we beat a player who hits corners and kills you if you drop a short ball? For her, this is the best part. She likes to play and she likes these challenges. In other areas such as service, there isn’t much work to be done, but in other areas there is,” said Tyzzer during a press conference after Barty clinched the title at Melbourne Park.

“Ash Barty will never win there” says Craig Tyzzer on her chances at the US Open

Ash Barty

Barty needs only the US Open title to complete the Career Slam and given her exploits recently, not many believe that she won’t be able to do it. Tyzzer however believes that it is difficult for Barty to win in New York.

“Ash loves grass, but Wimbledon is very different now. It’s like a slow surface. Many opponents have a hard time playing against her because she loves low bounce and slow grass. I always thought her first Grand Slam would come on the hardcourt, but I was wrong. What she has achieved is impressive.

“US Open? The tournament has to change the ball for them. They use a different ball for boys and girls. For Ash, it is a terrible ball. It is very light. It was the only tournament last year where she used polyester string so she had some ball control. If they keep holding that ball, no one like Ash will ever win there. If they don’t change it, she won’t win it,” added Tyzzer.
