The Canadian 20 year-old has had a phenomenal 2021 season, reaching the finals in the Stuttgart Open, semi-finals in the US Open, Halle Open, and Quarterfinals at Wimbledon. Rising to World No. 11, he is the youngest player in the ATP 12. With a participation in the US Open, and form that improves by the day, Auger Aliassime, coached by Toni Nadal, is scripting the start of a very successful career.

Dimitrov, who had made the quarterfinals in the Australian Open as well as the Geneva Open, has had a season plagued with injuries. With subsequent losses upon his return to the court, the former World No. 3 has been staring down the barrel of an underwhelming ending to what was a promising beginning to the year. Auger Aliassime has also repeatedly managed to get the better of him in the past, so it remains to be seen what the Bulgarian has up his sleeve.

Auger Aliassime enters the clash with a career record of 74-50 on Hard Courts and 19-9 on Hard Courts in 2021. He holds a 33-20 record across all surfaces in the season, compared to Dimitrov’s 16-14. Dimitrov on the other hand, has a career Hard Court record of 214-124, with a season record of 12-8.

Auger Aliassime is the third seed at the San Diego Open, and one of the title hopefuls after putting up great performances throughout the season. Dimitrov, contrastingly, has the favour of the experience gained from a long career, however that may not be enough.

Prediction: Auger Aliassime to win in 2 sets.
