The third day of the Australian Open 2022 witnessed some enthralling action from the players. The favorites Rafael Nadal, Alexander Zverev, and Gael Monfils steamed through second-round encounters in straight sets. While a huge upset came from Hubert Hurkacz who lost his match against Adrian Mannarino.
Rafael Nadal passes the second hurdle
Rafael Nadal in his second-round match faced the german Yannick Hanfmann. Nadal won his match in straight sets 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 and never looked in trouble. The 20-time grand slam winner has a great chance of making it 21, considering that for the first time he is playing a grand slam with no Roger Federer or Novak Djokovic.
However, it is too soon to think of that since he still has five matches to go. In the third round, Nadal will be facing the Russian Karen Khachanov who won the silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics. He is going to be a tough opponent for Nadal, still, Nadal will begin the match as the favorite to win.
Gael Monfils sails into the third stage
Gael Monfils seems to be on a run as he moves into the third round after defeating the Kazakhstani Alexander Bublik in straight sets 6-1, 6-0, 6-4. Monfils started the year with a win in the ATP tournament in Adelaide and is looking in prime form at the time.
Monfils will face the Chilean Cristian Garín in his third-round match on Friday. Monfils being the 17th seed will be up against Garin who is the 16th seed at the Australian Open. However, Monfils’s experience gives him an edge over Garin in the third-round encounter.
Cake Walk for Alexander Zverev
Alexander Zverev made his way into the third round of the Australian Open after winning a comfortable match against the local boy John Millman in straight sets 6-4, 6-4, 6-0. The world No.3 looked in great form and had lots of fun on the court.
Zverev will be facing the Moldovan Radu Albot in his third-round match on Friday. Zverev will obviously be the favorite in the fixture unless Albot causes a huge upset in the third round.
HUGE UPSET for Hubert Hurkacz
Hubert Hurkacz lost his match against the french Adrian Mannarino in straight sets 4-6, 2-6, 3-6. This was one of the biggest upsets in the Australian Open yet as the World No.10 lost against world No.71. This shows the uncertainty of sports, any player could on a given day beat any other player.
The upset was even bigger because Hurkacz was considered to be the favorite to play Nadal in the fourth round and could’ve ended Nadal’s run for his 21st grand slam title. However, with Harkacz out Nadal now has a really great chance of making it to the Semis.
