Jannik Sinner vs Joao Sousa: Match Preview

Jannik Sinner

Jannik Sinner had an excellent 2021, as he became the youngest player to win back-to-back ATP titles since Rafael Nadal in 2005 when the Italian won the Great Ocean Road Open at the beginning of the season, combining it with the Sofia Open title the youngster won to close out the 2020 season. Along with his singles title, he also won the Atlanta Open in the doubles category with his partner Reilly Opelka, defeating Steve Johnson and Jordan Thompson in the final. The Italian is currently World No.11.

Portuguese veteran Joao Sousa has not been in the best of form lately. His best result came at Serbia Open and Lyon Open where he was able to make it to the main draw through Qualifiers. He also took higher-ranked German Jan Lennard Struff to three sets in Sardegna but couldn’t come out as the winner. The 32-year-old reached the main draw as a qualifier after beating Radu Albot in the final qualifying round.

Jannik Sinner vs Joao Sousa: Head to Head

Joao Sousa

Jannik Sinner and Joao Sousa have faced each other once on the court, with Sousa winning on that occasion and thus holding a 1-0 lead over the Italian. Their only meeting came at Halle back in 2019, where Sousa won in straight sets.

Jannik Sinner vs Joao Sousa: Match Predictions

Jannik Sinner

Jannik Sinner would come into the Australian Open with confidence after his breakout 2021 season, where he reached the top 10 in the world rankings. The young Italian would look to take advantage of the absence of any of the Big 3 at the tournament and reach as deep as possible into the tournament.

Meanwhile, Joao Sousa would be the huge underdog in the clash, and would look to give a good account of himself.

Match Prediction-  Sinner to win in straight sets.
