Paula Badosa began her 2022 season with a loss to Victoria Azarenka in the first round of the WTA Adelaide International. She bounced back from it by winning the WTA Sydney International by defeating third seed Barbora Krejcikova in the final. The Spaniard has now reached the third round at Melbourne defeating local favourite Ajla Tomljanovic 6-4, 6-0 in the first round and Martina Trevisan 6-0, 6-3 in the second round.

World No. 66 Marta Kostyuk lost in the first round of WTA Melbourne (Summers Set 2 ) and followed it up with a second round exit at the WTA Adelaide International 2, in the lead up to the Australian Open. In the first round she defeated Diane Parry 6-1, 7(7)-6(2) and upset 32nd seed Sara Sorribes Tormo 7(7)-6(3), 6-3 in the second round.

Badosa has a 3-3 win-loss record at the Australian Open compared to Kostyuk’s 4-2. This is the Spaniard’s first time in the third round of the Australian Open, she lost in the first round last year to Ludmilla Samsonova in three sets. But she was a different player at that time, and ranked World No. 70. Now, she is an established top 10 player and is oncourse to make the quarter finals this year at Mebourne.

Badosa has dropped only seven games so far in this tournament and has looked impeccable in both her matches. Kostyuk had a good run to the third round as well by winning in straight sets in both her matches and also defeating a higher ranked player in the second round. But winning against Badosa, who is yet to lose in her last seven matches might be a huge hurdle for the Ukranian teen.

Prediction: Badosa to win in straight sets
