Nikoloz Basilashvili is currently ranked number 42 in the world and made his second appearance at the Olympic games after previously playing at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Basilashvili lost in the first round in Rio in three sets against then number 11 seed, Pablo Cuevas from Uruguay. He made his career-high ranking in 2019 of world number 16.

In the first round at Tokyo, Nikoloz was up against world number 90, Roberto Carballes Baena from Spain. Basilashvili was able to book his spot in the second round in just 1 hour 13 minutes after winning the match in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. He never gave Baena a chance to break and himself was able to convert only 2 out of 7 break points.

Lorenzo Sonego reached his career-high ranking of 26 last month and made his debut at the Olympic Games in Tokyo. He made his ATP Tour debut in May 2016 at the Italian Open and won his first ATP title in Turkey in June 2019.

Sonego is the number 13 seed in Tokyo and faced world number 110, Taro Daniel from Japan. Sonego came close to an early elimination but was eventually able to survive the three-hour marathon. Sonego was unable to break back in the first set which led to Daniel winning the opening set 6-4. Sonego was down in the second set but was successful in breaking back this time in the very last game where Daniel was serving for the match. Sonego saved a match point in the tiebreak to win the set 7-6 (7-6). The decider set also went to a tiebreak where Sonego was able to close out the set and the match, 7-6 (6-3).

Basilashvili has an overall win-loss record of 19-18 this year and a 7-7 record on hard court. While, Sonego has an overall record of 21-14 this year and a 6-7 on hard court. Sonego is more comfortable on clay court than hard and thus, was easily able to cruise past Basilashvili in Rome. The Italian also had a very physically and mentally difficult match in the first round which will affect his performance against Basilashvili.

Prediction: Nikoloz Basilashvili to win in 3 sets.
