Tokyo Olympics 2020: Belinda Bencic reveals Roger Federer’s text to her before the Singles Gold medal match

World No. 12 Belinda Bencic who was the 9th seed at the Tokyo Olympics 2020 created history by becoming the first Swiss woman to win an Olympic Gold in tennis when she defeated Croatia’s Marketa Vondrousova 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 in 2hours and 30 minutes in the Women’s Singles match.

It was a hard-fought victory for Belinda who had to see multiple match points slip before eventually winning the tie and the Gold Medal. Her victory makes her the only 2nd Swiss player to win a Gold Medal in the Singles event, the other one being Marc Rosset who won the Gold in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.

After getting her hands on the Gold, an ecstatic Belinda revealed what message she received from Swiss great Roger Federer who won the Gold in Men’s Doubles at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Bencic had earlier revealed that Roger was in regular touch with the Swiss athletes and was motivating them to do their best.

Roger texted me this morning saying today is a good day to achieve my dreams. It made me so happy,” said Belinda after the match.

Belinda along with her participation in the Women’s Singles was also part of the Women’s Doubles with Viktorija Golubbic and the pair had qualified for the Gold medal match after some thrilling wins in their run. The pair was up against Czech Republic’s Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova in the finals and had to settle for the Silver medal as the Czech’s won in straight-sets.

Belinda will go back from Tokyo with 1 Gold and 1 Silver medal and joins Roger Federer as the only Swiss with 2 tennis medals. Roger along with his Doubles Gold also won a Silver medal in the Men’s Singles at the 2012 London Olympics and so far was the only Swiss tennis player with 2 Olympic medals.

While the Olympics results do not have any impact on the rankings, winning a Gold is nevertheless a great achievement and Belinda has surely added a golden chapter in her career.
