It was a hard-fought victory for Belinda who had to see multiple match points slip before eventually winning the tie and the Gold Medal. Her victory makes her the only 2nd Swiss player to win a Gold Medal in the Singles event, the other one being Marc Rosset who won the Gold in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.

After getting her hands on the Gold, an ecstatic Belinda revealed what message she received from Swiss great Roger Federer who won the Gold in Men’s Doubles at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Bencic had earlier revealed that Roger was in regular touch with the Swiss athletes and was motivating them to do their best.

Roger texted me this morning saying today is a good day to achieve my dreams. It made me so happy,” said Belinda after the match.

The pair was up against Czech Republic’s Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova in the finals and had to settle for the Silver medal as the Czech’s won in straight-sets.

Belinda will go back from Tokyo with 1 Gold and 1 Silver medal and joins Roger Federer as the only Swiss with 2 tennis medals.
