World No. 12 and the 9th seed at the Tokyo Olympics 2020, Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic created history in the Gold Medal match of Women’s Singles as she becomes the first Swiss woman to win the Gold in the Singles event. Belinda was up against Czech Republic’s Marketa Vondrousova in the clash for the Gold and went on to win a tightly contested 3-set thriller 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 in 2 hours and 30 minutes.

Belinda won a total of 107 points while Marketa managed 101 points as both the players gave all they had in the title decider. Bencic did not manage to hit a single ace while Marketa hit 3 of them. With both the players having identical stats during their clash, it was the errors that cost the Czech star the Gold.

Marketa had 5 double faults, 41 forced errors and 36 unforced errors and managed to win only 6 of the 18 break-points she had a shot at. Belinda on the other hand had 2 double faults, 30 forced errors and 30 unforced errors while managing to win 6 out of the 10 break-points she had for grabs.

Belinda managed her nerves in the final game as she was 15-40 down but came back brilliantly to win the next 3 points and then over the course of 3 deuces she finally held her racquet in the air winning the Gold Medal, her biggest title so far in her career.

Belinda with her Gold Medal now joins Marc Rosset (1992 Barcelona Olympics) as the only Swiss player to win a Singles Gold. Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka with their Doubles Gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the pair of Martina Hingis and Timea Bacsinszky with their Doubles Silver at the 2016 Rio Olympics are the only Swiss tennis players to have an Olympic Medal.

With a place of her own created all by herself, Belinda will surely receive a heroic welcome on her return to Switzerland as she now is an Olympics Gold Medallist.
