Matteo Berrettini vs Hubert Hurkacz : Preview

Matteo Berrettini

Matteo Berrettini reaches his 2nd ever Grand Slam final with a win over Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-3, 5-7, 7-5, 6-3 in the quarter-finals of the Wimbledon 2021 in a tightly contested match that lasted for over 3 hours and 4 minutes. This was the 2nd match when Berrettini dropped a set in the tournament after his 4-set win in the first round.

Berrettini had won his 2nd, 3rd and 4th round matches in straight-sets. Berrettini had nearly won the 2nd set in the quarter-finals, but a great comeback by Felix in the 2nd set extending the match, post which Berrettini did not give any chance for the young Canadian to come back into the tie.

Hubert Hurkacz becomes the 2nd ever Polish man to make it into the semi-finals of a Grand Slam after registering his biggest ever win in the quarter-finals of the Wimbledon 2021. Hubert was up against childhood idol and 8-time Wimbledon champion Roger Federer whom he went on to defeat 6-3, 7-6(4), 6-0 in 1 hour and 49 minutes to move into the last-4.

Hubert staged a great comeback in the 2nd set. He was 1-4 down with Federer cruising but broke the Swiss twice and eventually won in the tiebreaker. This was Hubert’s fourth straight-set victory in his 5 matches at Wimbledon with having dropped sets only in his 4th round match victory against World No.2 Daniil Medvedev whom he defeated in a thrilling 5-setter.

This will be the third meeting between the duo and will be their first-ever Grass meeting. Both their previous matches had been played on Hardcourts, with both the players having won 1 match each that sees the head-to-head tie levelled at 1-1.

Hurkacz will come into this tie with a career Grass record of 10-10 and an overall season record of 19-11. His stay at Wimbledon has surely revived his season after having lost 6 consecutive matches before entering the All-England Club.

Berrettini will take the court with a career Grass record of 25-6 and an overall season record of 30-6. He is yet to be defeated on Grass this season having won the title at the 2021 Queen’s Club. Looking at his current form, he seems the favourite to win this clash but it won’t be an easy match and a 5-setter can be expected.

Prediction: Matteo Berrettini to win in 5-sets.
