BREAKING: Dominic Thiem makes the final decision on his participation in the 2022 Australian Open

Dominic Thiem makes the final decision on whether or not he will play at the upcoming 2022 Australian Open, the first Slam of the new season.

Dominic Thiem

World No. 15 Dominic Thiem had one of the most troublesome seasons in 2021 due to his recurring injuries that restricted his season to only 18 matches till June post which he had to end his season. Thiem also had to exit the Top-10 because of low appearances having started the season as World No. 3.

Thiem suffered an injury prior to the Australian Open which forced him to retire from the match in order to stay fit for the Australian Open where he lost in the 4th round, his first Slam event after winning the 2020 US Open. He made a little comeback but then picked up another knee injury that forced him on the sidelines for another spell.

When things looked to get better, the Austrian suffered another setback at the inaugural Mallorca Championships where he injured his wrist that eventually ended his season. He remained hopeful to make a comeback in 2021 but failed and did not play on the Tour after June. He was set to play the 3-day exhibition event in Abu Dhabi but made a last-minute withdrawal from the tournament saying he was not fully fit.

Thiem was eyeing a return to Grand Slam action at the upcoming 2022 Australian Open but the fans will have to wait further long to see the Austrian back in action as he announces his withdrawal from the first Slam of the new season and it will be his 3rd straight Grand Slam event that he is now going to miss due to his wrist injury.

“I will not play this year at the Australian Open in Melbourne, a city that I love and where I have great memories of unforgettable matches in front of amazing crowds. I will miss the Australian fans but I will be back in 2023. We believe this is the right decision in order to have a good return to the competition,” Thiem wrote in his Twitter message announcing his withdrawal.

Thiem has a good record on Claycourts having reached the finals of the French Open in 2018 and 2019 and going forward, the Austrian has made the decision to return to action directly on Clay.

As per reports, Dominic has locked in the Clay events in Cordoba, Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro and Santiago. Given his better record and suitability to the surface, it is a wise decision as he needs wins to regain his confidence and with the tournament in Cordoba set to begin from 31st January, it will give him further rest.
